How do I know my child/friend/parent isn’t simply gay and not trans?

 

While there is some overlap between sexuality and gender identity, it is important to remember that being trans is not the same as being gay. Identifying with a different gender, and changing your body or the way you look, does not necessarily change your sexuality. If a trans person was attracted to men before coming out as trans, then it is likely that this will not have changed. Being trans is about a person’s gender identity rather than sexual attraction.
